Chapter 27
"You're the sweetest girl," I cooed.
Bastet meowed in return. Her eyes were starting to shift from their original blue to a deep shade between gold and amber. Almost like Xavier's.
"And the prettiest, and the fluffiest."
She jumped into my lap and curled up, purring her little heart out. She was a sucker for attention, and I was more than happy to give it to her.
"I love you so much, Bast," I told her as my hand ran the length of her back. She made me feel like a mom, or as close as I'd ever be to one. I had no plans to birth human children, but maybe one day I'd get another furry baby.
I petted her happily as I hit the play button on another episode of True Blood. It didn't hold my interest as much as it had a few years ago. Probably because my boyfriend was hotter than Eric Northman.
I didn't make it that far before my phone was ringing. "Hello?"
"Hey, Wren."
I pulled the phone away from my face, looking again at the word "unavailable" on the lit screen. "Trey?" I'd blocked his number weeks ago. He'd either gotten a burner phone or was using an app to call me for it to come through.
"Don't hang up. Please." He sighed into the receiver. "Look, I know you don't want to talk to me. But I found some of your things when I cleaned my room up yesterday, and I figured you'd want them back."
I considered for a moment before asking, "What things?"
"Some jewelry, makeup, a few jackets - "
"And you're sure they're my things and not some other girl's?"
His voice was hard when he answered. "They're yours."
"Why don't you just bring them by my mom's?" I probably had a few of his things there, too. We could swap.
He sounded defeated as he said, "I sprained my ankle at the game two days ago. I can't drive."
"Oh." I'd kind of forgotten that football was even a thing. I was so glad I didn't have to sit through those fucking games anymore. "Okay," I sighed. "I'll swing by and grab them."
"Cool."
He started to say something else, but I hung up before he got it out.
It was a little after two, which meant Xavier was in class right now. I considered calling Drew to come with me, but he hated the Alpha house as much - if not more - than I did. He'd probably still come along for me, bit it felt rude to put him in that position.
I texted Xavier once I was already in the car. "Have to run to the Alpha house really quick to pick up some of my things."
About ten minutes later, I was pulling up in front of the Alpha house. I checked my phone, reading over the texts Xavier had sent me.
"Don't go over there, princess." Then, "I'll get your stuff for you." And finally, "At least let me come with you so he doesn't try anything stupid."
"I'm already here, and you're in class.
